Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas Feud Comes to a Head

March 2, 2010

The Gulf Cartel and their former enforcement wing of ex-Mexican military special forces operatives, the Zetas, seem to have finally split for good, as violence erupted all over Reynosa and Matamoros last week. The Zetas have spread like crazy in the past few years and moved from being just an enforcement wing to a cartel in their own right, trying to take over the operations of the Gulf cartel after its leader Osiel Cardenas, an ex-cop who put the Zetas together, was arrested and extradited.

The US actually closed its embassy in Reynosa, which is a huge sign of the unrest there—the embassy in Juarez is still open. Also a group assaulted a police station.
